What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, which helps remove toxins and waste from the body. By using light, rhythmic strokes, MLD encourages the natural flow of lymph fluid, aiding in reducing swelling, promoting healing, and boosting the immune system. I combine a Brazlian Lymphatic Drainage with traditional MLD (Vodder Certified) to provide the most soothing experience, even while recovering from surgery.
When you have any type of surgery, your lymphatic system is disrupted. Think of it like a freeway system throughout your body that is responsible for getting rid of waste (water, cell debris, proteins, and long chain fatty acids). When you have surgery, it is like an accident on the freeway. Traffic stops and needs to be redirected so that traffic can move again. Your lymphatic system works in a similar way. When there is an injury or trauma to the body (such as surgery), swelling occurs which is your lymphatic system’s way of beginning the healing process. It’s basically just doing its job! When your bodies lymphatic load is excessive, meaning that there is too much lymphatic fluid for it to process and it has nowhere to go because it is not being manually redirected, that can cause complications like excess scar tissue, fibrosis, and can slow down your healing process.
In the beginning, your surgeon will most likely provide drains to help remove the excess lymphatic fluid. You can and should begin Manual Lymphatic Drainage with your drains still in place with a certified professional which will help to move things along (we never physically drain incisions). After your drains are removed, Manual Lymphatic Drainage becomes even more necessary so that we can redirect fluid back to the cardiovascular system. Remember that accident on the freeway? That is your incision sites. That lymphatic system is still repairing itself, so it is necessary to redirect the fluid while your system is rebuilding for proper function.
Why is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Necessary After Surgery?
How Soon After Surgery Should I Begin Treatment?
When it comes to surgery, especially cosmetic surgery, it is best to begin treatment within 2-3 days after your procedure and continue for a minimum of 10 sessions. This will help to relieve excess swelling and accelerate your healing process. Being a post-surgery specialist, I am experienced in working with all types of surgeries with my gentle, pain-free technique. Every session will be uniquely catered and modified to the stage of healing that you are in. I do not use any special tools, just my hands. This allows me to feel where there are more areas of fluid build up so that I can gently coax the lymphatic fluid leaving you feeling lighter and relieved.
What Should I Expect After My First Session?
Sweet relief! You will feel immediate results after your first session! Not only will you be completely relaxed, and have a significant decrease in pain, but you will also feel lighter and your faja may fit a little looser. Most of my clients feel the immediate urge to use the restroom due to the lymphatic lymphatic fluid being processed through the kidneys. You will probably feel the need to urinate more frequently, and urine may smell or look different (this is the waste being removed from your body). Often times the pain medication that is prescribed can cause constipation. Manual Lymphatic Drainage also helps with this, and it is a huge sense of relief!
