In a controlled clinical trial, 20 women were split into two groups after surgery. Both wore compression garments, but one group also received MLD twice weekly for three weeks (6 sessions total), starting six weeks post-op.
Treatment group: Mean reduction of edema was 9.8 cm between weeks 6 and 8
Control group: Mean reduction was 6.6 cm in the same period
Statistical significance: Although the difference (9.8 cm vs 6.6 cm) did not reach statistical significance (P = .11), it suggests a ~3.2 cm greater reduction for those receiving MLD (source)
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) has been shown to reduce post-op swelling and fibrosis after cosmetic surgery.
